Born and raised in the United States and ethnically from Afghanistan, Edreace Purmul's parents immigrated to the United States as refugees in the late 70s escaping the Soviet invasion of their homeland. Purmul graduated with a degree in business and film from San Diego State University in 2006. Residing in southern California, Purmul's first accomplishment in 2008 (Mozlym) received immediate recognition and acclaim for its socially conscious appeal. Hobbies include mixed martial arts, kendo, and horse-back riding. Favorite movie of all time: Braveheart (1995). Believes film is closest to poetry, as an art form. Plays the anonymous horse rider in his film Mozlym (2008). Feels that "Sex-scenes only have the power to destroy a movie". Heavily influenced by film theorists - Sergei Eisenstein and Andre Bazin, directors - Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott , and actors - Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman . Had a strong background in film editing before his directing debut, thus giving him more versatility in his filming techniques. Draws his own storyboards both prior to - and on the morning of shooting. During the filming of his first feature Mozlym (2008), Purmul almost broke his left arm, was thrown off a horse, endured permanent damage to his right eardrum from an unexpected gunshot blast, and incidentally continued filming under the effects of pepper-spray. He claims it was "all part of the job" and that "blood, sweat, and tears should be expected as a hands-on director". He was an artist since early childhood.
